When Growth Starts to Strain: Grounded Support for Leaders

Alan MacAulay brings decades of operational excellence to MC Advisory

Most founders and CEOs in Atlantic Canada don’t wake up thinking, “I need a COO.”

You bootstrap. You figure it out. Maybe you carry more than you should, because that’s how most businesses here are built. There’s a quiet sense of pride in that (as there should be).

But there comes a point where grit stops being enough. That’s typically when I get the call for help.

I’ve spent more than three decades working in and alongside Atlantic Canadian organizations across technology, engineering, SaaS, professional services, and other sectors. Over that time, I’ve seen a consistent pattern: strong businesses reach a point where what got them this far isn’t enough to take them to the next level.

Signs of strain

No matter your industry or sector, whether you’re a tech company, a lobster fisherman, or the owner of a service-based family business, here are some telltale signs that leaders need operational support:

  • You’re the bottleneck (and you know it)
  • Work is happening, but progress isn’t–and no one can clearly explain why
  • Your leaders aren’t aligned, and you’re mediating everything
  • Growth is creating stress, not momentum–and it’s starting to feel harder, not easier
  • You don’t trust your numbers or your plan
  • Something feels off, but you can’t pinpoint it
  • A major change is coming, and your operations aren’t ready

If you’re recognizing your business in this list, it’s not incidental. It’s a sign the business has outgrown how it operates. Decisions slow down. Priorities compete. Leaders pull in different directions. Nothing is broken, but nothing is working as cleanly as it should.

As businesses grow, their operations need to evolve with them. When it doesn’t, strain starts to show up in subtle but important ways. Left unaddressed, these patterns don’t stabilize on their own. They compound, slowing growth, increasing risk, and putting more pressure on the leadership team.

Grounded, practical leadership

What drew me to MC Advisory is a shared belief in grounded, practical leadership, meeting leaders where they are, and focusing on what will actually move the business forward.

There’s no shortage of buzzwords in our field: optimization, transformation, operating models… you get the idea. But most leaders I work with aren’t looking for slick terminology; they want a clear path forward that makes sense for them, their team, and their companies. They want to understand where momentum is being lost, where risk is building, and what needs to change to run with less friction, confusion, and overwhelm.

Practical, hands-on support

My approach starts simply: with a conversation. I want to understand what’s really happening beneath the surface, not just what’s being reported, but how decisions get made, how priorities are set, and how the business is actually operating day to day.

From there, my role varies from client to client, depending on their unique needs. My role is to step in and restore clarity. Sometimes that’s as a fractional or interim COO. Other times, it’s more advisory, such as leadership coaching for the founder, CEO, or working with the leadership team. Often, my role means working both on the business and in it, bridging the gap between big-picture strategy and day-to-day operations, solving immediate challenges while building operations that support sustained growth.

My approach is hands-on. I don’t just drop a report, deliver recommendations, and move on. I like to stay close to the work I support, to see it through.

Over the years, I’ve noticed there’s a natural frequency, a quiet hum, when things are running well. That looks and feels like:

  • Your team is aligned
  • Effort translates into progress
  • Accountability is clear
  • Risks are articulated and managed
  • Growth feels like momentum, not a millstone

If you’re reading this and recognizing your business in it–feeling the strain, the friction, or the sense that things are harder than they should be–that’s usually the moment to act. Not because anything is broken, but because your business is ready for a different level of operational leadership.
