The Atlantic Groundfish Council (“AGC”) represents commercial groundfish license holders in Atlantic Canada.  This group of leading fishing and processing enterprises includes some of the Canada’s most innovative small, medium, and large seafood companies that collectively employ thousands of people, both at-sea and in shore-based facilities in 30 communities across Atlantic Canada.

The Opportunity

Accountable to the President, the Director of Fisheries Management and Science is responsible for implementing AGC’s engagement with governments and industry on Atlantic Canadian groundfish management and science programs. This role requires an understanding of the science and management principles underlying sustainable and responsible fishing practices, as well as the ability to develop and implement long-term strategic plans for fisheries management within the guidance of the member companies and the President.

Who You Are

As an ideal candidate, you are an experienced leader with a demonstrated track record of success commensurate with a director level position. Applying strong collaborative skills, you will develop and advance industry views on long-term strategic plans for fisheries management, with a focus on promoting sustainable and responsible fishing practices, as guided by member interests across a variety of fish stock units and regions in Atlantic Canada.  In addition, you will contribute to research design, analysis, and communication to stakeholders. This will include participating in Canadian Science Advisory Secretariate meetings hosted by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (“DFO”). This position is accountable for supporting administration including financial management of projects.

Qualifications

Drawing upon experience working with government agencies, NGOs, and fisheries management stakeholders, you have superior collaboration, communication, consultative, and consensus building skills. A degree in a related field is required. A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a field related to fisheries management and an understanding of fisheries science.  Important to the success of this position is knowledge of relevant fisheries management policies.
